About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
All students will be allocated a mentor/associate mentor prior to commencement in practice. The student will receive a Welcome Pack and will receive a full orientation and induction during the first 48 hours.
Students are welcome to have a pre-visit to the service and partake in their induction prior to commencement in practice and time will be given in lieu (optional).
Please contact placement no sooner than two weeks prior to commencement to arrange your shift pattern.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students are allocated a mentor or associate mentor to support them in practice; we can also accommodate third year final students with the support of a sign off mentor.
All mentor/associates and sign off mentors are updated on an annual basis as required by the NMC (2008) and are registered on the live register for mentors held by the Practice Educator Facilitators.
In the event of your allocated mentor being unavailable for annual leave or sickness alternative arrangements will be made to support your practice. All qualified staff have the opportunity to study the preparation for mentorship module accredited or non-accredited.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
07.30 - 15.30
13.00 - 21.00
19.30 - 07.45
Long Days:- 07.30 - 19.45
Students are not expected to work long days but if students are interested in working this shift system then this can be negotiated with your mentor.
Notes:- Students are encouraged to work a mixture of early, late and night shifts which incorporates some weekend exposure to experience 24 hour care. Students are expected to work at a minimum of 40% of their time with their mentor.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
- Direct nursing care
- Admission/discharge procedures incorporating care programme approach
- Devising Comprehensive Care Plans and Risk Assessments
- Full range of physical health care
- 1:1 inverview techniques/completing mental state examinations
- Administering prescribed medications and observing for any side effects
- Dual diagnosis Substance misuse OT and Psychology assessments
- Undertaking any identified and appropriate interventions with clients
- Support clients to maintain their interests, identity and emotional well being whilst receiving various forms of care
- Observing and reporting any changes in their condition, finance, environment etc
- Assist clients to maintain and improve their mobility, supporting with the use of Public Transport Encourage clients to maintain their personal hygiene and appearance
- Assist clients to manage their personal and domestic circumstances, supporting shopping and cooking
- Assist and maintain clients nutritional needs and ensure they are catered for
- Assist/promote and encourage clients to use community facilities

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Clinical governance and clinical audit
Students can access a variety of spokes placements which are highlighted in the student Welcome Pack and in a spoke folder in placement.
Students are expected to complete a spoke placement feedback sheet to identify what learning outcomes they want to achieve, what they learnt from the spoke experience and a discussion with their mentor of their experience and what further development opportunities would support their learning.
Students are required to wear their uniform and to bring other clothes when escorting service users with other members of staff (Please note that staff and Students are not to wear jeans), ID badges must be worn/be visible at all times. Anyone in inappropriate dress will be sent home to change immediately
You may be supported by practice staff studying for the preparation for mentorship course, this is overseen by a qualified mentor and your documents will be countersigned by the mentor
All student nurses are expected to arrive on duty in a timely manner and punctuality is of paramount importance Mobile phones If student nurses aquire a mobile phone, these are to be turned on to silent or vibrate when on duty. Mobile phones can only be used when on your breaks, urgent phone calls need to come via the landline number.
Allocated Duty Rota
Your mentor will allocate your shift system and as mentioned above you will be required to work 40% of your time with your mentor. Student nurses are expected to fulfill the allocated shifts that are given to them.
If mentors are finding it difficult to roster your shifts due to the student requesting shifts to work for personal reasons, then this will be discussed with Janet Alarcon - Mentor/Practice Lead.
The team are able to facilitate all OSCE/PBA learning outcomes at this placement.
