About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Introduced to mentor and associate mentor, off duty discussed, time arrange to do initial interview, spoke placements discussed.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Each student is usually given a mentor and an associate.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
19.30pm - 08.00am
Long days: (only if mentor works them) 07.30am -20.00pm
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for children with both surgical and medical conditions.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Caseys Model of Partnership in Care.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Assisting with venepuncture and cannulation
- Assisting with Aseptic Non Touch Technique (ANTT)
- Assisting with infusions and injections
- Being exposed to general pre and post op care
- Assisting with wound care
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Drug administration and the use of the different drugs throughout the unit.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The Elective Treatment Centre is a new area within the childrens hospital, it is under constant review by the staff on the unit. Changes are often made to improve the patient journey.
