About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Mentors will be allocated to students before commencement.
Welcome pack and teaching packs will be given on commencement.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors and students will work together as possible at least 3 shifts per week.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
7.30 am - 15.30 pm
12.30 pm - 20.30pm
20.00 - 08.00
Long day:- 07.30am - 20.30pm
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
General rehabilitation for patients who have had surgical procedures, for example hip fractures. Or have been admitted to hospital generally unwell.
Philosophy: to endeavour to assist the patient back to their baseline and to assess as necessary
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Pathways for example Acute Stroke Pathway also Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Gaining excellent skills in the role of a Rehab Nurse.
- General nursing skills
- Communication skills within a team work approach
- Understanding in complex stroke care and general rehab.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Students will be able to experience caring for patients following a stroke and gain a good understanding of multidisciplinary team working.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
The Nightingale Units is a new addition to Fairfield Hospital, we currently offer up-to-date teaching sessions on an ongoing basis to keep staff and students updated to evidence based practice for example Acute Stroke Pathway.
Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Dietitian, Speech and Language Therapists, Pharmacy, Social Work Team, RAID Team, (Rapid Assessment Intervention Discharge), Bed Manager, Chaplain, Discharge Liaison Team.
The Nightingale Unit offer a big welcome to all students.
