About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
On your first day you will undergo orientation to the ward which includes a guided tour of the ward, and introduction to the staff. You will meet your mentor and the PEL.
Be given you student handbook (Welcome Book)
Shown where the student notice board; student file and student learning resources are located.
Students will be made aware of Trust Training available to them
Any appropriate student documentation will be completed
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
All students will be allocated a mentor.
The Ward has regular night staff so is able to provide a mentor on night duty.
Students also have additional support from ward staff, PELs, PEFs and ULLs.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
7.30am - 3.00pm
1.30pm - 9.00pm
8.45pm - 7.45am
No twilight shifts available. The ward doesn't not actively encourage students to work double shifts ie: 07.30am until 9.00pm.
Students who have exceptional circumstances necessitating working double shifts will need to have this sanctioned by their personal tutor at University and the ward manager and PEL.
Students can negotiate their off duty with their mentor and the PELs

What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Basic skills relating to communication, personal cleansing and dressing, bowel and bladder/elimination care, eating and drinking, mobilising, maintaining a safe environment. Nursing documentation including risk assessments
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Removal of surgical drains/sutures and clips (stitches)
Urinary catheterisation of both male and female patients
Aseptic non touch technique (ANTT)
Blood glucose monitoring/documentation.
Cannula removal/VIP scores (assessing the site where the cannula enters the skin)
TPR charts and neurological observations
Pre-operative and post-operative surgical care
Tracheostomy care-tube changes/suction/stoma care and emergency care
Treatment room care of emergency admissions patients
Online referrals to members of the Multi-disciplinary team.

The purpose of the ward is to deliver the highest quality of care to our patients thus delivering a prompt and efficient service to our clients.
The staff on the ward will keep updated with regards to research and evidence based practice in order that they are able to meet the needs of patients. Nursing care will be delivered to each patient whilst promoting independence and maintaining confidentiality.
We aim to provide patient centred care to meet the total health care needs of the individual. We endeavour to treat our patients as individuals and respect any cultural and religious beliefs.
