What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Welcome by mentor or nominated person depending on shift pattern
Discussion about hospice/palliative care and things students may encounter
Meet mentor to discuss learning objectives
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Time with mentor to review learning objectives, give feedback
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
07.30 - 14.30
13.00 - 21.00
20.15 - 08.00
Early shifts are encouraged for learning opportunities
Night duty is acceptable if students need for their requirements as limited learning opportunities
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Palliative care; Sympton control of pain, nausea/vomiting, breathlessness
End of life care; Dealing with dying patients and their families, acceptance/understanding of the process
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper Logan and Tierney considering activities of daily living but including physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual which have an enormous impact on people at the end of life
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Administration of medications, personal hygiene assistance, toileting and how to adapt depending on their condition or fatigue
Communication skills and dealing with difficult issues around end of life
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Intravenous infusion therapy
What resources are available to help students learning?
Staff including wider MDT
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Students are able to undertake projects relevant to their learning
Hospice doesn't have any research at present
Hospice at home based at (hospice), day hospice
Palliative care specialist nurses; community or hospital
We are happy for students to visit prior to placement to discuss and allay fears or misconceptions of hospices
