About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be able to establish a basic knowledge of mental health nursing practice within the primary care mental health team.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Assessors are allocated on a rotational basis.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Monday to Friday. Usually 9am to 5pm depending on patient needs and mentor work patterns.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Students will be able to gain experience of observing and being involved in nursing interventions, and experience of assessment and liaison with secondary care services.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
The team provide brief interventions which offer a wide range of psychological, practical and supportive interventions for patients.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Intervention and evaluation of all patients referred.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Brief intervention therapies with common mental illness.
What resources are available to help students learning?
Computer access, Library access at Fairfield General Hospital.
What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
Spoke placements/exposure with other members of the PCMHT, and other associated services such as Choices etc.
