About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Full orientation to the Bury Access Team and adjoining teams within the Mental Health Departments – Student Information Pack available prior to placement – Full induction with a qualified mentor – or associate – named mentors can be determined before actual placement begins
Students are encouraged to contact the department before their placement begins to arrange agreed starting date and time

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
The Bury Access Team work between the hours of 8am – 9pm / 7 days a week and are part of a 24 hour service for service users needing mental health support – arrangements can be made to accommodate most days and hours of work
Night shifts are not available on the Bury Access Team – arrangements can be negotiated with other teams within the department to complete night shift hours for students – some restrictions apply!
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Patient Care is determined from a full Mental Health Needs Assessment Tool – based on information on the initial referral through subsequent assessment/ risk assessment

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
All activities are audited for research/ logistics
Spoke placements can be identified to meet the student’s needs to complete the relevant assignments and competencies – a full range of spoke placements can be identified on placement
The receiving/ screening/ triage and managing of referrals into Secondary Care Services through a single point (Bury Access Team) – through the screening process to signpost to the most appropriate service – The Bury Access Team also arrange – in Clinical Appointments – full Mental Health Needs Assessment which also includes a full Risk Assessment.
All Assessments/ Triage and signposting of referrals are designed to determine the need for further and appropriate support/ treatment and onward referrals.
Referrals are received from GP’s within the locality and other external agencies – although the Bury Access Team arranged clinical appointments for those between 16-65 years of age – the referrals can be for all ages.
