About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Mentors and Associate Mentors are identified in all Hub areas.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Shifts may vary according to individual areas - out patients 8am - 5.30pm, ward 7.30am - 5.pm early, 12.30pm - 800pm late, theatre 8.00am - 5.50pm no night shifts, no weekends.

- Corneal Squint
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
- Basic observational skills
- Administration of Medicines
- Principles of Asepsis
- Cannulation and Venepuncture
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
- Use of slit lamp
- Assessment of visual acuity
- Instillation of eye drops and implications.

- Monthly multi disciplinary audit
- Meeting to review various aspects relating to optiticalmology

The Unit consists of 3 mainareas - Ward, Clinic and Theatre. The Hub placement will be in one of these areas and the student will spoke out to the other two.
Other spoke areas include Pre-assessment clinic, Orthoptist dept, HSDU, Visual impairment team, Corneal team.
