About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Induction day incorporating and introduction to the Trust and use of the WORLD Model of learning. A Placement pack will be given relating to the students community placement.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students are introduced to their assigned mentor as soon as possible and action plans / personal development plans are agreed.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
8.30 - 5pm
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
A wide variety of care situations are available on this placement. Students partake in or observe well baby clinics, immunisations, hearing screening, support visits to families, developmental reviews and assessment and support of vulnerable families. There is also the opportunity to go on a variety of spoke placements.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Newmans Model and Child and Family centred model.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Interpersonal skills, communication & listening skills, child development, baby weight reviews, immunisations.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
knowledge of post natal depression, vulnerable families i.e.asylum seekers, deprived families, domestic violence, drug and alcohol abuse.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?
- Ongoing practice development using the Solihull Approach to parenting.
- Weaning, nutrition and breastfeeding management
- Public and Community work with Oldhams Estate.
Nursery Nurse, Health Visitors in alternative geographical areas, staff nurse, speech therapist, hearing screening health visitor, midwife, district nurses.
