Sonic Fusion Projects supports artists to explore the use of sound and technology in the creation of immersive experiences.
The commissions will explore the innovative use of advanced sound technologies housed at the University of Salford’s Acoustics department. With the support of academic staff, the artists have been invited to use Ambisonic and Wave Field Synthesis systems.

Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) allows the user to create realistic and imagined soundscapes in physical space using a large array of independently controlled speakers which enable sounds to be moved around anywhere in that space. Salford Sonic Fusion Festival has commissioned artist Mark Fell to create an installation using the 64 Channel, 128 speaker WFS system to be presented during the festival in the University's anechoic chamber.

Graeme Truslove: Ambisonic commission at MediaCityUK

The word 'ambisonic' means ‘sound all around’. Graeme Truslove's work will use this unique and advanced localisation sound technology to create a 3D sound experience for the visitor.

Mark Fell is a multidisciplinary artist based in Sheffield. In 1998 he initiated a series of critically-acclaimed releases, featuring both collaborative and solo works, on labels including Mille Plateaux, Line, Editions Mego, Raster Noton and Alku. Although working in electronic and techno music traditions, Mark’s practice has become increasingly informed by non-European music.
This is evident in two recent linked works – Multistability and UL8, which explore a number of unfamiliar timing and tuning systems. Uncut magazine called the works “completely mind-blowing” while The Wire said they were “amazing”. In addition to recorded works, Mark often produces installation pieces using multispatial speaker technologies. His work in this area is characterised by ‘non illusion’-based approaches to surround sound environments. This methodology became prominent in a work commissioned by Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary (Vienna) in collaboration with Roc Jiménez de Cisneros in 2008. For this the two artists developed a 48-speaker piece that rejected complex three dimensional panning systems in favour of spatially-static synthetic sound.

Graeme Truslove is a composer and performer based in Glasgow. His output includes: electro-acoustic and instrumental composition, live sound design for theatre, sound-art installations, audio-visual art, and improvisation - performing on guitar and laptop in a variety of ensembles. His work is largely concerned with conflicts between intuitive performance and the fixed medium, often exploring how fixed medium expressive and structural possibilities can be integrated into improvised performance and vice versa. His approach integrates multiple strata of musical time, from that at the macrostructural level down to the formation of timbre itself, conceived in terms of the sonic grain.
Graeme's music has won awards from: METAMORPHOSES 2010 composition competition, Belgium (First Prize); the British Council; the Dewar Arts Awards; the Scottish Arts Council; Creative Scotland; the Performing Rights Society Foundation (PRSF); the Phonos Foundation (Spain); Sociedad General de Autores y Editores SGAE (Spain), The Prince’s Trust and others.

With over fifty years’ experience in acoustics, audio and video, Salford is a world leader in both research and delivering undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Current research involves architectural acoustics, environmental noise, soundscapes and audio processing. Salford is also a leading partner in the BBC Audio Research Partnership.
