Four students who formed a sketch group after meeting at the University of Salford have received a nomination for the prestigious Foster’s Newcomer Award at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Gein’s Family Gift Shop are a group of performers who graduated from Salford in 2012. They performed Volume 1, dark, absurd and fast paced sketches marrying the tragic with the riotous.
The quartet are already winners of awards for Best New Sketch Act and Audience Choice and are now in the running for the Newcomer Award whose previous winners include Cambridge Footlight performers Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Emma Thompson as well as more recent winners such as Russell Kane and David O’Doherty.
For years the University of Salford’s performance degrees have produced some of the finest comedians in the country, including superstars like Peter Kay and Jason Manford. More recently Salford has introduced an undergraduate degree course in Performance: Comedy Practices.
Lisa Moore, University of Salford lecturer and programme leader for the Comedy Practices BA, said, “It’s great to see these four graduates making waves at an international arts festival on the scale of Edinburgh. It's testament to Salford's teaching and facilities that it has attracted, and continues to attract, performers of this calibre. Geins deserve the recognition they have had in Edinburgh. Their hard work is paying off and the University is very proud.”
