University of Salford fashion students have won a prestigious clothing industry award for the third time.
The Fashion course scooped the WGSN Digital Portfolio Award at the annual Graduate Preview Day organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) to showcase student portfolios from 28 of the UK’s leading colleges.
It is the sixth BFC Colleges award the University’s fashion department has won in the last seven years.
Work was reviewed by a judging panel of industry experts, which included fashion designer Betty Jackson CBE; Cassandra Stavrou, founder of Propercorn; Charlotte Whitehead of BFC; WGSN Director of Global Fashion Awards Lauretta Roberts; and Sarah Penny, Editor of Fashion Monitor.
Now in its 21st year, Graduate Preview Day highlights a wealth of new, young and innovative British design students due to be graduating this summer and fosters relationships between fashion colleges and industry.
The event brings together industry insiders from media, recruitment, retail, design, manufacturing, sales, marketing and PR to preview the work of students who will be entering the job market later in the year. This year it attracted representatives from ASOS, Burberry, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, River Island, Topshop and media including Vogue Italia, Vogue USA and Wallpaper.
Fashion Programme Leader at the University’s School of Arts & Media, Bashir Aswat, said: “I’m really pleased for our students who work incredibly hard to develop their design work in readiness for industry.
“They have made the most of the latest technology to showcase their portfolios in the most professional context and it is wonderful to have been recognised at the British Fashion Council once again.”
The winning student collections will be on show at London’s Graduate Fashion Week from Saturday 30 May-Tuesday 2 June.
