Salford Business School strengthens senior team

Salford Business School has strengthened its senior management team with the appointment of two new members of staff in the key areas of enterprise and its Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme.

Coinciding with the 25th anniversary year of the teaching of business and management at the University of Salford, the appointment of Dr Kurt Allman as Associate Dean for Enterprise and Engagement, and Dr Brian McGarrie to the position of Director of MBA and Executive Programmes, reinforces the Business School’s aim to be a first-choice international provider of next-generation business and management education and research.

Dr Allman has joined Salford Business School from Manchester Business School’s Enterprise Centre, where he was Business Manager. His engagement and research interests focus on SMEs in technology and science and over the last decade he has worked with more than 300 companies, including some of the region’s most dynamic start-up businesses as part of his role as Director of Knowledge Exchange through the Innovation, Design, Entrepreneurship and Science (IDEAS) collaboration. This partnership between business and management schools at Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster universities was designed to help develop skills and expertise in local businesses, offering them access to research and encouraging strategic relationships with companies to form longer-term networks.

He also promotes student learning through ‘live project’ work with companies and has written extensively on enterprise, entrepreneurship and the role of new technology in transforming the ways in which businesses operate.

“Students are expecting more from their education – they need to be able to understand the ways in which business practices, technology and people are blended for commercial success,” said Dr Allman. “Students also want practical enterprise skills, engagement with business and the opportunity to develop an entrepreneurial mindset, something the University of Salford has a long tradition in fostering.

“In addition, businesses large and small are increasingly turning to universities to support them in developing innovative business models and platforms that exploit new media opportunities, and this is another real strength of Salford Business School.”

Dr Brian McGarrie has held various MBA director roles at business and management schools in Nottingham, Durham, Leeds, Newcastle and Lancaster, and has substantial experience in the development of distance and technology-enhanced learning. He is an experienced lecturer in executive education and MBA programmes in global supply chain management, risk and crisis management, and operations management.

His recent work has included teaching on the Airbus World Class Leaders programme and he has taught executive students in Singapore, Malaysia, India, Jordan and Zambia. He has also worked as a consultant and adviser to the Scottish Government and to a large number of companies.

Dr McGarrie said: “I’m delighted to be joining Salford Business School at such an exciting time in its history. I am looking forward to teaching the MBA at the University’s MediaCityUK facility and making a major contribution to the continuing development and innovation of the MBA and Executive programmes, both nationally and internationally. I am also hoping that my specialisms will support wider Business School developments.”

There have also been a number of recent professorial appointments in the Management Studies, Accounting and Finance and Marketing study areas, with further new members of staff joining the Business School in the next few months.
