Tuesday 24 January 2017

A talented student has made history with the Manchester Mystics, after storming to victory to win the inaugural Women’s British Basketball League Cup.

Isabel Bueriberi, 21, plays as a forward on the winning team. They defeated the Nottingham Wildcats 71-60 in front of a large crowd at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham

Manchester Mystics won the first WBBL Cup after participating in a knockout tournament, which saw teams in the Women’s British Basketball League go up against each other. The Mystics, who are currently third in the league table, are made up of twelve women and are the sister team to the successful men’s team, Manchester Magic.

Isabel, who is a second year Civil and Architectural Engineering student said:

“To win the national trophy was an unbelievable feeling. Considering how hard we all worked, it’s amazing to see it all pay off.”

“I have always enjoyed basketball. I tore a cruciate ligament on my right knee when I was 15, but the love I have for this sport has made me carry on and keep playing”.

The 5’11” star, who is originally from Madrid, is also a member of the University of Salford’s Women’s Basketball team.

Isabel continued: “The club has really helped me off the court. It has helped me develop my leadership skills”.

The Women’s basketball team is one of several extra-curricular activities that is available to students at The University of Salford, as part of ‘Team Salford’.

Team Salford encompasses all areas of sport and physical activity on campus, and looks to provide students with the opportunities they need to develop their interest and skills, both on and off the court.

Rachael Davies, who is the Sports Partnership Manager at the University of Salford Student’s Union said:  “Being a part of Team Salford gives students the opportunity to be a part of sporting activity during their time at University, and acts as a stepping stone into furthering their sporting careers .”

Isabel’s next match with the Mystic’s will be at home, the National Basketball Performance Centre in Belle Vue on the 28th January for the WBBL Trophy Tournament. Tip time against Team Northumbria will be 3:00pm.
