Study zones
The libraries are zoned to provide a choice of study environments to suit your needs. Know the library zones to help to make your library work better for you.
The Essentials
Noise annoys
- Moderation is the key in the Collaborative zones – quiet discussion is allowed, but you must not disturb other people.
- Silence is golden in the Silent zones – not even whispering is allowed.
Mobile phones
- No ringtones please - mobiles must be switched to silent everywhere in the library.
- Text away in silence - keep your texting silent and you can do it anywhere
Food and drink
- Keep a lid on it - keep your drinks covered, and non-alcoholic, and you can do this anywhere too.
- Find your Food friendly zones - here you can eat your cold snacks in a dedicated zone.
Definite No, No’s
Some things are never allowed in the libraries; these include
- Hot food - wherever you’ve bought it
- Alcohol - of any variety or strength
- Smoking - and that means electronic cigarettes too
Please help us to maintain an environment where studying in The Library is a pleasant and productive experience for all.

Collaborative zone
If you want to study as a group, this is the zone for you.
You can discuss your work quietly as group discussion is allowed here, but these areas are still places for study so take care that your discussion doesn’t get so animated that you disturb other people nearby.
- Don’t forget to bring headphones if you watching online materials/listening to music on a PC, so others are not disturbed.
- Consider using a bookable study room if your group wants to discuss an assignment more freely.
- Use a Mobile phone zone if you want to make or receive a phone call, as mobile phone calls tend to be quite loud.

Switch to silent
Keeping your mobile switched to silent, means that:
- You won’t disturb others with your ringtone
- You can enjoy silent texting as much as you want at your study table/PC
Making and taking phone calls
Quiet conversation is permitted in Collaborative zones but we all tend to talk louder, and louder during phone calls, so please move to the nearest Mobile phone zone to take the call. Look out for signage in your library.
