Chat

The Chat service (found in the sidebar on the right of most of The Library's web pages) gives staff and students at Salford (as well as any members of the public who are browsing the website) the chance to ask a question of our library staff. Within service hours we aim to respond within one minute.

How do I use it?

Click into the lower pane and start typing your question. When you've finished hit the Enter key. Your question will appear in the upper pane, followed shortly by a reply from library staff. If you're already an instant messaging user (msn, Yahoo, Meebo etc) then this is all going to be familiar to you.

What subjects are covered?

It's a Library Enquiry service so we aim to answer anything, from specific questions about Library policies, book availability and e-resources to general knowledge questions.

There are two qualifiers to this:

  • If an enquiry relates to a service provided elsewhere in the University (e.g. Finance, IT Service Desk) we may have to give you their contact details rather than a direct answer.
  • For a more in depth enquiry we may need to take your details and reply at a later time.

What are the Chat service hours?

9am – 12noon and 2pm – 4.50pm, Monday to Friday. This will be extended according to demand.
