SOLAR
SOLAR (Search Our Library's Academic Resources) brings together all of the Library's collections and allows them to be accessed from a single interface, regardless of format, type or location.
Where and when can I use it?
SOLAR is available on ‘quick search’ PCs in The Library, from The Library’s website and the Student Channel, and via Blackboard, on and off campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sign in to SOLAR with your network username and password.
Can I use SOLAR to find information on a subject or topic?
You can do a simple search by entering one or more words relating to the subject in the SOLAR Library Search box. You can make your search more precise by using the Advanced Search option.
How can I view the full text of an item?
If online access is available, this will be indicated in the record. To view the full text, click on the View online tab, you will then be able to view the text, and will also have the option of opening the resource in a new window.
How can I find a subject database?
By selecting Find Database, you will be presented with the option to browse alphabetically, enter the name of a database, or search by subject and type.
How can I tell if an item is in stock?
If the item is held in the library, there will be a locations tab. Click on the tab, and then select the library name to check availability.
How can I check my library account?
To check your library account, select ‘My Account’, then ‘Access My Library Account’ and enter the number on your ID card (excluding P). You will then be able to view your library account, including information on loans and fines.
Can I find my module reading lists in SOLAR?
Currently, SOLAR does not link directly to the LASU reading list system, but you can search LASU from the SOLAR Library Search page, by clicking on the LASU icon below the search box.
I’ve found a really useful item. How can I share this with my lecturer and the students on my module?
You can create your own favourites, add tags and reviews to resources, set up alerts for related items, and e-mail results to yourself and others.
Can I use EndNote Web?
When you find the item you want, click on the details tab, then click on the ‘Send to’ link, and select EndNote Web.
Need further help?
You can click on the SOLAR Help tab. Help is also available at the Enquiry Desk, via the CHAT service or from Roving Support staff in each library. If you attend a Library information literacy session, you will be shown how to use SOLAR by your Academic Support Librarian. You can also make an appointment with your Academic Support Librarian if you need further help in using SOLAR.
