Athens
Athens is a system which controls access to web-based subscriptions, including many of those provided by The Library. As a University member, you have your own * Athens username and password to allow you access to our resources, including electronic books and journal articles.
- Don't share your Athens username/password with anyone else or your account could be withdrawn.
- You may also receive Athens login details from other organisations connected to your programme, such as the NHS, to access their subscriptions. These are unconnected to your University Athens username and password.
Finding your Athens username and password
- Log on to a PC on campus using your University network username/password, and open your F: drive. Open the file called Password.txt and you will find your Athens username and password.
or
- If you are off campus, you can login to your filestore (F drive) and find Password.txt. To access your filestore visit www.filestore.salford.ac.uk and enter your network username and password. When asked to supply a username and password use the following:

Using Athens to access University resources
With your Athens details you can access various resources.
From SOLAR you can access various databases, providing you with references to relevant articles in your subject. Some of these also allow you to view the full article online. There are also online newspapers and dictionaries, electronic books and journals, and other general resources.
Getting help
Most resources have their own Help system available, offering searching tips on how to get the best results. Alternatively, visit an Enquiry Desk or contact your Academic Support Librarian.
Athens simplified
During the summer of 2013, the Athens username/password will be replaced by a system that asks for your University network username and password (e.g. uis123), to access Athens authenticated resources.
We are currently testing this new system and welcome your help in trying it out. Find out more
