What is Library Search Beta?

Library Search Beta has all the same great resources as SOLAR with lots of improvements that you asked for, including:

  • A re-designed interface that makes it easier to find the info you need
  • A more mobile-friendly set up
  • A quick and easy way of saving and organising your records

'Beta' means that we're still working to make it the best it can be before we launch it fully in early 2017. Please bear with us while we try things out and let us know what you think of the new look service.

SOLAR Library search is available on and off campus, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Sign in with your network (Blackboard) username and password in order to search our collections, save your searches and check your library account.

If the item is held in the library in print form, there will be a Get It tab. Click on the tab, and then select the library name to check availability. You will have to sign in to SOLAR Library search to see how long you can borrow each item for. If we have online versions of resources, they can be accessed by clicking on the View It tab. If we have both print and online versions of a resource, both links will be displayed.

You can do a simple search by entering one or more words relating to the subject in the SOLAR Library search box. You can make your search more precise by using the Advanced Search option.

If online access is available, this will be indicated in the record - click on the View It tab. Depending on the supplier, you may then be able to view the full text straight away, or you may be prompted to login. You will also have the option of opening the resource in a new window.

To check your library account, select ‘Sign In', enter your Network username and password, then select 'My Account’.

From the Library homepage, select the Resources tab. You will be able to browse a list of databases alphabetically, enter the name of a database or search by subject and type. From SOLAR, you can search for the name of a database, or select the Databases link at the top of the page.

Currently, SOLAR does not link directly to the Reading Lists at Salford. Visit from SOLAR by clicking on Reading Lists at the top.

You can create your own favourites, set up alerts for related items, and e-mail results to yourself and others. If you go to SOLAR Library search, select Sign In and then input your network (Blackboard) username and password, you will be able to save search results to your My Library page. From there, you can e-mail your results, save them to EndNote or share via social media.

When you find the item you want, click on the details tab, then click on the ‘Send to’ link, and select EndNote Web.

You can click on the SOLAR Help tab. Help is also available at the Student Support Desk, via the Ask a Librarian instant messaging service or from Roving Support staff in each library. If you attend a Library information literacy session, you will be shown how to use SOLAR Library search by your Academic Support Librarian. You can also make an appointment with your Academic Support Librarian if you need further help.
