Easy access to resources

Off-campus access made easy

We recommend that you access resources in one of three ways.

  • Via Library Search is the easiest and most effective method. Most of the View It links that you see in Library Search will ask for your Salford network (Blackboard) username and password to log into the resource. You'll only have to do this once per session - the second time you click on a link, you won't need to login again.
  • The E-resource login tool can be used if you find a resource outside of Library Search. See below for more of the benefits.
  • If you use Google Scholar, then add Salford's Find It buttons to make logging into e-resources as easy as possible.

E-resource login tool

If you are off-campus and reach an e-resource you're not logged into, the first thing to try is the E-resource login tool. To install, simply drag and drop the button below into your bookmarks bar.

A link will appear in your Favourites bar. When you're on a webpage and want to login, just click on this link to gain access. For more information, including how to use this on tablets, see the Library Search blog

Please contact library-eresources@salford.ac.uk if you have any queries.

Other things to note

The majority of our e-resources are set up to use the new system. If you use Library Search, you will always be directed to the best link. Please contact library-eresources@salford.ac.uk if you have any problems.

On some sites the old 'institution' login allowed you to personalise your account, for example, saving searches or favourites. Access to these features has changed. Click the platform names below to see how these are affected:

The details

Our new system directs your web traffic via a hosted proxy server running EZproxy software. It works by showing a university IP address to the suppliers of E-resources. From this, suppliers know you belong to Salford and provide you access to the books, journals and databases the Library subscribes to or buys.

When you're using this service, you'll notice an extra bit of text in your address bar: salford.idm.oclc.org

You can configure some reference management tools to use this system. For example, for Papers on a Mac:

  • Go to Preferences > Sources
  • In the Library Proxy field enter the text
  • https://salford.idm.oclc.org/login?url=%@
  • Leave the Authentication URL field blank
