Referencing your work
As part of your university education you are expected to read, understand and discuss the writings of others. When you produce a piece of work you must acknowledge the sources you have consulted by citing and referencing them correctly.
Why do I need to reference?
There are many reasons why referencing the work of others is vitally important in your work. By correctly referencing you will:
- protect yourself against accusations of plagiarism
- demonstrate that you have read widely and understand your subject
- support your arguments with published research
Referencing can enhance your work by showing that you are able to apply the theory you have read to your practice, and it substantiates your own hypotheses by connecting your arguments to the work of other authors.
