Visitors to The Library

It is possible for non-University members who wish to use our facilities to join either as reference only members or external borrowing members. You will need your library membership card each time you visit.

Joining The Library as a reference only or external borrowing member gives limited borrowing rights but there is a yearly charge for some.

How much does membership for visitors cost?

Reference access is free
External borrowing membership is free for:

  • Alumni members (graduates from the University of Salford)
  • NHS Trust Honorary Library Members
  • SCONUL Access: includes academic staff, postgraduates research and taught, part-time students and distance and placement learners
  • Associate College Staff
  • Members of the local community (those that live, work or study in Salford)
  • Members of companies associated with the University of Salford are entitled to borrowing membership through the Business Services team. Business Services pay a fee for this.
  • External borrowing membership costs £50.00 each year for all other members.

How many items can I borrow?

  • External borrowing members may borrow up to four items from the Normal and One week loan collections.
Short loan items may not be borrowed.

Please note there are fines and charges for overdue items.

What other services can I use?

  • All members have reference access to a wide range of books, journals and magazines
  • Areas to read and study
  • Access to some electronic resources (please ask at a library Enquiry Desk for information regarding this).
  • Coin operated photocopying facilities
  • Support from staffed Enquiry Desks in each library

Due to licensing restrictions there is no access for external members to computing services except the limited electronic resources mentioned above. Document Delivery and book reservation services are only available for our current staff and students, but your local public library may provide these for you.
