Obtaining library resources

We will work with you in the selection of information resources in all formats (books, journals, software etc.), and in the preparation of reading lists to support your students' learning.

What is the purchasing procedure for new resources?

Please submit all requests for information resources to your Academic Support Librarian. They can also provide further information relating to the development and management of library collections.

Your Academic Support Librarian will also advise on any specific collection development policies relating to your College or School.

Is there a University Reading lists Strategy?

Yes, the University has developed a Reading List Strategy [pdf] to ensure that students have a positive experience of, and ready access to, essential and further reading materials; and that they have realistic expectations of what can be provided.

Module reading lists

Module Reading lists clearly outline reading for students associated with a module.

They will contain references to:

  • Core texts (all formats and media) – reading that is essential and required of all students.
  • Further reading – reading that is desirable to expand knowledge of a subject, which will contain a range of material for students to select from.

Reading list submissions

To ensure material is made available to students, it is advisable that reading lists must be submitted to Library Services well in advance of each semester.

  • Semester 1 module reading list deadline - end of July
  • Semester 2 module reading list deadline - end of November

We would appreciate it if you would encourage feedback from students on the reading list as part of your module evaluation so that they can be improved each year. For further information regarding the strategy, or for help in compiling your reading list please contact your Academic Support Librarian.

Journals and electronic resources acquisition

We will order new journals and electronic information resources subject to available funds, overlap with existing resources and network compatibility. As subscriptions represent a long-term commitment, we will also require evidence of consultation within your College or School, and that the title supports your wider teaching, learning and research objectives.

We will always prefer electronic access over print and are happy to arrange trials or demonstrations of electronic resources if available.

What are Digitised offprints?

Digitised offprints are scanned versions of copyrighted material (journal articles and book chapters) that may not be easily available in the library but which are essential reading for students. Module leaders should submit requests for digitisation via LaSU. We will provide access to this material via Blackboard, and subject to any copyright regulations. See our Digitised offprints FAQ guide for more information.
