Off campus learners

Off campus learners are welcome to use all the existing library services available to on campus learners. However, we realise that for many of you this may not be possible so we have developed the following services to help you access as much as possible from your home/workplace.

The Library has an electronic security system in place at each site so you will need your library membership card each time you visit.

Registration

Once registered with the University you should receive an ID card. You will also need a computer network username and password, which may have been given to you on a coloured sheet at registration. If you were not issued with one at registration please contact us with your name, roll number and the title of the programme you are studying.

Only students on designated distance learning courses will be entitled to use the Document Delivery service.

Borrowing books

Undergraduates may borrow 15 books and postgraduates may borrow 25 books of 'normal' loan status. The loan period is four weeks. For more information, please see the General Guide on Borrowing books and other resources [pdf].

Renewing books

If you have visited campus and taken out some books it may be useful to know that you can use SOLAR for online library renewals. You can also phone the ITS Service Desk on 0161 295 2444. Both of these services are available 24 hours a day.

Please note: You will be unable to renew if you have fines outstanding or if a book has been reserved by someone else, so we recommend that you try to renew in advance of the due date to give time to sort out any problems before fines are charged.

Document Delivery

If the library does not stock a particular book or journal article we can obtain it for you through our Document Delivery service.

Off Campus Document Delivery request form

Registered off campus learners can also have photocopies of journal articles or book chapters sent to them from items we have in stock for a standard fee of £1 per item.

To apply for a document please fill in a Off Campus Document Delivery request form [pdf]. Complete the form, sign the copyright declaration and post it to us at the relevant library site together with a cheque for the appropriate amount. Due to admin fees we must ask that a minimum of 5 requests are submitted at any one time.

We have to comply with copyright law, so there are some restrictions on supply and each request must be signed. UK copyright law allows us to photocopy no more than one chapter of a book or 5% of the whole book, whichever is greater, and no more than one article from a single issue of a journal for an individual student.

For more information, please read the User Guide - Copyright - the effects upon you [pdf].
