e-Submission, grades and feedback
e-Submission enhances the student experience of submitting coursework, viewing grades and receiving feedback.
There are two ways of submitting assignments through Blackboard – either by using Turnitin (via Blackboard) or by using Blackboard submission tool.
Your tutor will have set up the e-submission area in your module so if in doubt ask your tutor which method to use.
Most text based assignments will be through Turnitin.

Using Turnitin
Turnitin is being used at Salford as a tool for e-submission and to assist you in checking for plagiarism.
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is being used at Salford as a tool for e-submission and matching text electronically to assist you in checking for plagiarism. Where appropriate to the assignment, you will submit work to Turnitin for marking. You may also be offered the opportunity to submit draft assignments to Turnitin allowing you to see any text that Turnitin has matched to its data bank and check that it is correctly referenced.
Accessed via Blackboard, work submitted to Turnitin is checked against millions of internet, book and journal sources. For draft assignments, Turnitin produces an originality report highlighting which parts of the assignment have been matched.
Your responsibility: what you need to know
See your module handbook for further information
- When you submit work through Turnitin, you are accepting the submission declaration.
- The naming convention for your files - your school may specify a particular format.
- Keep copies of email receipts from Turnitin as proof of submission.
- If you have a disability sticker, make sure it is included in your assignment.
- Files must be less than 20Mb. Contact your lecturer if your file is greater than 20Mb.
- File types accepted are: MS Word, WordPerfect, PostScript, PDF, HTML, RTF or plain text. You can ask at The Library for help if you are not sure about a file type.
Make sure you submit your assignment to the correct, FINAL submissions folder.
Work submitted mistakenly to the DRAFT folder will not be marked.
In some programmes or modules Turnitin may have been set up with two folders. If this applies to you, one is the DRAFT folder and the other is the FINAL folder. You may submit your assignment into the DRAFT folder to check for plagiarism and self-rectify, but remember you must submit your assignment into the FINAL folder for it to go through for marking.

Where do I submit my final assignment?
Only your lecturer can tell you how and where to submit your assignment. If you are asked to submit your assignment electronically through Blackboard using Turnitin, make sure you know from your lecturer where the submissions folders are.
