Dear Library

Dear Library is a campaign to promote the appreciation of libraries and the opportunities they offer throughout people’s lives. It is a collaboration of Salford University Library, Salford University Arts Unit and Salford Community Libraries. It was conceived by poet, novelist and Scottish Makar, Jackie Kay, who is also Chancellor of the University of Salford. Jackie has previously been involved with a similar project with the Scottish Book Trust.

The project has three strands:

  1. 1. Creative writing
  2. 2. Promoting reading
  3. 3. Communities working together

The project will launch with an event in mid-February 2017 where Jackie will read a new poem, “Dear Library”, which was inspired by a recent visit to the University archives. The event will take place in the exhibition space in New Adelphi Building where the Arts Unit have selected University Art works to complement the archival material Jackie chose for inspiration.

There will be activities and events to promote Dear Library throughout the next year until February 2018.
