Visit to China

Friday 23 November 2012
Dr Jingchen Zhao, Law School lecturer and Associate Head for Research, undertook a 5 day visit to Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai and Hong Kong in November.

This short visit was to support and enhance student recruitment from China, and to broaden the acknowledgment of the University of Salford, Salford Law School, and its highly respected LLM course in International Business Law and Regulation.

Over the five working days, Jingchen visited 6 Higher Education Institutes, met with the staff from the University of Salford's China Office in Beijing, and held meetings with local English language providers and agencies.

Jingchen's talks were about the differences between studying law in China and undertaking a law degree in the UK, the advantages available to Chinese students undertaking postgraduate study in Salford, and possible career development opportunities. Jingchen also talked about his own experiences as he encouraged students to develop their study on the LLM course by undertaking a PhD. Students were also given a sample lecture on the International Corporate Governance module offered within the LLM course.

The positives the students found from the visit include the close relationship between the LLM modules offered by the Salford Law School and current economic climate. They were particularly impressed by the Lady Hale Building and the campus, its convenient location to Manchester City Centre, the generous international scholarship scheme and the comparatively reasonable accommodation cost of living in Salford and Manchester.

The small group teaching, excellent learning environment and facilities including the postgraduate suite and 24 hour library also proved a draw for the students, as well as the excellent experiences and comments from graduates and current students and the wide range of research expertise of the Law School staff.

Whilst in China, Jingchen also met with the law school executive in Guangdong University of Business Studies, who expressed strong interests in building partnership with the Salford Law School.
