Graduation success

Friday 5 October 2012
This Summer's graduation ceremony saw the second doctoral award for a Salford Law School candidate. In 2011, Dr Graeme Collinson received his PhD and Dr Rob Cooling followed in his footsteps in July 2012.

It was particularly pleasing to see Rob graduate as he was an alumnus of the research centre that pre-dated the establishment of the Salford Law School, where he graduated with an MA in Health and Safety and Environmental Law.

Rob says "I began my journey at the University of Salford studying for a Masters in Health and Safety Law. I chose this course as the content is diverse, examining different areas of law, including health and safety, environmental and employment law. After completing the Masters, I decided to pursue my studies and embark on a PhD in Health and Safety Law. My thesis examined the law and management of worker involvement in safety and health.

"During my 7 years of part-time study, I changed jobs on three occasions and relocated overseas. Salford Law School provided incredible distance learning support and resources throughout my career transitions, which made sure that I never lost my connections with the School. Since graduating, I have gained promotion and now head up a team of consultants delivering strategic health and safety consulting services throughout the Middle East. On reflection, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Salford University and the learning which has undoubtedly improved my level of critical analysis and decision making."

We think Rob's story proves that postgraduate study for those already in professional positions can be of great benefit in terms of career progression. The School has no doubt that they will see many more successful postgraduate research students at future graduation ceremonies.
