English for Academic Purposes

Salford Languages offers a number of extra-curricular courses to help you improve your academic English so that your assignments, dissertation or thesis are of a higher quality. Our provision is free of charge and open to all Salford students – whether you are a studying for a bachelors, masters or doctorate.

Learning English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) is a series of sessions offered in six-week units designed to help undergraduate students with English language skills. The aim of LEAP is to give you the confidence in your English language ability so that you can make the most of your study at the University of Salford. Enhancing your English language ability will improve the quality of your assignments and dissertation, helping you to maximise your potential.

  • Unit 1 Academic Reading and Writing - designed to give you support with sourcing materials, referencing and planning your assignments, together with academic writing including grammar, vocabulary and how to organise this information for an assessment.

  • Unit 2 Academic Presentations – designed to give you support in preparation for academic presentations, including effective planning, preparing visual aids, using signposting language, prioritising and summarising.

Learning English for Academic Purposes Higher is for postgraduate researchers (PhD students) and is designed to help with thesis writing and academic speaking to present and defend your research.

  • Unit 1 Philosophical Stance - Understanding the meaning of philosophical stance and methodological choices for defence of the PhD, pronouncing key terms, expressing reliability and validity, giving and receiving peer feedback, asking and answering questions.

  • Unit 2 Academic Writing - Designing strong structures, tenses in different parts of the thesis, signposting words and phrases, linking devices, articles, irregular plurals, prepositions, word classes, explicit structure and implicit internal logic.
