Criminology

Criminology studies the nature and causes of crime and also conducts a searching examination of the criminal justice system. It uses scientific methods to make practical and critical contributions to the definition, prevention and control of crime. It seeks to challenge popular perceptions of crime and the misunderstandings they often entail.

A degree in criminology can lead to careers in: the criminal justice system, including the police (either as police officers or in support roles), court services, the prison service, the probation service, youth offending services and youth justice; social welfare posts (such as housing officers, homelessness officers, work with refugees and victim support/counselling); mental health support and drug rehabilitation; and the legal profession (often through a conversion course after graduation).
