Sociology and Criminology

The University has a long history of expertise in the field of social sciences, with teaching and research of the discipline dating back to 1954. Today, we continue to build upon our expertise in this area, and have developed an enviable reputation for research-led teaching and strong links with front-line professionals.

The School offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in sociology and criminology, with a host of module options allowing students to tailor what they learn to their personal interests and career aspirations.

Our academics combine their expertise to deliver interdisciplinary courses with subject areas including sociology, criminology, anthropology, psychology, law and social policy.

Learn in the classroom, practice on the frontline

The School's curriculum places a strong emphasis on practice-based learning and we provide opportunities for our students to gain frontline experience through our ongoing community projects and partnerships with organisations including Amnesty International, the European Commission and Greater Manchester Police.

Students are also encouraged to complete independent learning and enterprise project modules that involve working directly with practitioners from their chosen field of study. Previous students have worked with the police, social services and prison officers to apply their skills and engage with the community to solve real problems.

In a multi-cultural society, gaining an international perspective is an essential aspect of the learning process. To this end, we draw upon cross-national studies,  international exchanges and our own diverse student body to provide classes that encourage students to compare their own experiences with those of contemporaries in other cultures.

Research partnerships that make a difference

Research undertaken in the School impacts not only on our teaching but also professional practice. Our work is characterised by close engagement with policy makers, practitioners and the wider community to produce relevant and influential research.

We are the only institution outside of London to run a Centre for Prison Studies where academics and frontline professionals from disciplines including criminology, sociology, intelligence studies, social care, mental health and probation can meet to share knowledge and develop best practice. The Centre is international in scope and benefits from partnerships in Russia, India, Romania, Iraq and the USA.

We have excellent links with local agencies and organizations in the criminal justice sector, including Greater Manchester Police, Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Courts, the Crown Prosecution Service, Salford Youth Offending Services, Greater Manchester Probation Trust, HMP Manchester, HMP Forest Bank, local defence solicitors and barristers, and Victim Support.

Experienced practitioners from these organisations work with us in the classroom, on placements and field visits for students, and in research projects.
