Translation and Interpreting Studies

The Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies includes one of the largest clusters of translation and interpreting specialists in the UK and brings together the language expertise and scholarship of experts in literary and social theory to foster an interdisciplinary approach to translation and interpreting. The Centre also works closely with members of the School’s Centre for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics.

European Master's in Translation NetworkTranslation and Interpreting are taught at all levels from foundation to masters and our postgraduate courses in translation and interpreting are amongst the longest running in the UK. The MA Translating course has been awarded membership of the prestigious EU Commission-sponsored European Master's in Translation Network.

These courses combine a coherent academic curriculum, are supported by state-of-the art language learning resources, and have a strong vocational focus: they feature guest-lectures from professional translators and interpreters (such as keynote lectures, seminars on specialised translation and business practice), together with a well-established network of professional student placements within the Graduate Apprenticeship Scheme and the Community Action Scheme. The School can boast an established and growing network of alumni who are now key players in the profession and frequently return to Salford to hold guest seminars at the University.

Links with industry

The Centre has also developed links with the profession through the Institute of Translation and Interpreting, the North West Translators Network, and the Association of Translation Companies, and is a founder member of PLUG, the Professional Language University Group. We host events run by professional organisations, some in partnership with the Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies. The Centre leads the National Network for Translation, is a partner in the National Network for Interpreting, and also in the North West Regional Consortium (all part of the HEFCE-funded Routes into Languages Programme) .

Research

The Centre organises a number of research events in translation and interpreting studies such as seminars and conferences and provides a stimulating environment for research in the field.

We are active researchers, and in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), members of the Centre were returned under Linguistics, Communication, Cultural and Media Studies, European Studies, and Social Work and Social Policy and Administration. The University of Salford has received excellent results for the four units of submission in which School of Languages staff were returned in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise: on average more than 70% of returns within these units were rated as being of "International Quality", of which over 30% were rated as being "Internationally Excellent" or "World-leading”.
