Hispanic Studies

If you are interested in learning the Spanish language and becoming familiar with Spanish and Latin American culture, then our modules can help you develop a high level of proficiency in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere alongside many native speakers from partner universities who are spending their placement year at Salford.

During each academic year you will also have the opportunity to attend social events such as Spanish fiestas - a variety of cultural events are also organised in Manchester every year that our students benefit from such as the international Spanish and Latin American film festival and the cultural programme of the Instituto Cervantes.

Courses

You can combine the study of Spanish with translation and interpreting or modern languages (as main language or as part of the University Wide Languages (UWLP) programme), law (as main language) or with linguistics or English language and linguistics as part of the UWLP programme.

All Spanish modules have an applied approach with students reading and writing a variety of text types such as reports, letters, essays, CVs, etc.; practising role-plays and presentations in a variety of situations (organising a trip, looking for accommodation, etc.) and topics (the history of flamenco, Spanish gastronomy, popular festivals, etc.); debating current affairs; translating a range of texts from journalistic to literary and more.

Topics tend to be related to current affairs and have a high intercultural content: the Spanish monarchy; youth unemployment and culture; tourism in Spain; the Spanish economy; Latin American development; contemporary music; etc.

Students have access to the Language Resource Centre, offering a variety of multimedia language-learning support materials for Spanish.

Residence Abroad

Students spend either 6 months or an academic year in Spain (depending on the programme of study) in a variety of academic or work placements.

Academic placements take place in one of our many partner universities based in exciting, vibrant Spanish cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, Salamanca, Castellon, Seville, Malaga, etc.

Work placements include working in translation companies, teaching English as a foreign language, working in administrative posts in companies and universities, etc.
