Academic, cultural and creative learning for those passionate about language
Excellence in applied language study
The School has nearly fifty years experience developing applied language courses that aim to create articulate, multi-lingual graduates.
Our range of courses in languages at both undergraduate and postgraduate level concentrate upon developing the verbal and written language skills, together with the theory and professional experience that are attractive to employers both in the UK and abroad. Languages available to study include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Spanish, and English as a foreign language.
Linguistics and English Language are key areas of research and teaching expertise in our School. Two of our most popular degree courses are the BA (Hons) Linguistics and the BA (Hons) English Language and Linguistics. At postgraduate level we offer an MA in TESOL and Applied Linguistics.
We also offer courses in interpreting, translation, and other courses combining language study with study in linguistics, politics and contemporary history. We are leading the National Network for Translation and are partners in the National Network for Interpreting.
A world of opportunity
Our curriculum offers a strong vocational focus and the School has gained an international reputation for teaching excellence. We are one of only eleven UK institutions to be members of the European Masters of Translation Network, placing us at the forefront of education and training in this area.
The MA course at Salford taught me a lot about how to approach a translation task and gave me plenty of practice, which meant that I was confident enough to start working as a full-time translator as soon as I finished the course - Ros Mendy, MA in Translating for International Business
The employability of our graduates sits at the heart of our curriculum and students are encouraged to take advantage of our partnerships and undertake work placements in the UK and abroad. We have an extensive network of placement providers including large multinationals such as Guinness, Deutsche Bank, Mercedes Benz and Alcatel.
Building upon our educational resources and international partnerships, the School has state-of-the-art facilities including the Language Resource Centre, comprising audo-video facilities and conference interpreting suites.
