Centre for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics
The Centre provides a wide ranging curriculum in theoretical and applied linguistics at undergraduate and MA levels as well as providing supervision to research students.
We are committed to providing a full and interesting curriculum in our undergraduate and postgraduate courses and a stimulating learning environment for our students.
We organise a range of activities and events, including research conferences and workshops, research seminars, masterclasses, a linguistic reading group, and days for English Language teachers. We have an active student society which organises a range of social and linguistics-related events and activities.
Research Environment
We are active researchers, and in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE), the panel assessed the linguistics submission as having 75% of its research activity of 'international' quality with 35% of our submissions being classed as 'internationally excellent' or 'world class'.
We provide a stimulating environment for research in a wide range of subjects across the field, including the syntax-semantics interface, morphology, phonology, semantics, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, first language acquisition, corpus linguistics, descriptive linguistics (particularly English, French and Arabic), language pedagogy and lexicography.
In addition to promoting research in linguistics, we also encourage synergies between linguistics and related disciplines in other Schools in the University. We particularly encourage interdisciplinary research in linguistics and translation and interpreting studies and in linguistics and language pedagogy.
We have a small but vibrant postgraduate community who take part in a range of activities and events, including postgraduate workshops organised in collaboration with Manchester University. We welcome applications from students wishing to be supervised in any of our areas of expertise.
Salford Working Papers
The Salford Working Papers in Linguistics were launched in October 2010 to promote the research undertaken by staff and postgraduate students at the Centre for Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. The working papers are published annually and the call for papers is issued in late October every year, with a submission deadline of late January. Accepted papers are published the following July.
