Dr Peter Lieb

Academic and Research Career

Peter Lieb is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of War Studies, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He completed his M.A. in History at the University of Munich and his doctorate at the Institute for Contemporary History in Munich. From 2001 to 2005 he was a researcher in the project ‘The Wehrmacht during the National Socialist regime’, run by the Institute for Contemporary History, Munich. In 2001, he was a visiting scholar at the German Historical Institute Paris.  

His doctoral thesis won both the Werner-Hahlweg-Prize for Military History in Germany in May 2006 and the Prix Guillaume Fichet – Octave Simon in Paris in October 2004. He is also a member of the Council of the Army Records Society.  

He was elected an ESRI Research Fellow in November 2006.  

Research Interests  

Peter Lieb is interested in a range of subjects in the field of German and European military history in the twentieth century, in particular German occupation policy and practice in Europe in both the First and Second World Wars, as well as insurgency and counter-insurgency theories.
