Professor Neil Nugent
Academic and Research Career
Prof Neil Nugent has been Professor of Politics and Jean Monnet Professor of European Integration in the Department of Politics and Philosophy, Manchester Metropolitan University, since 1993. During his long career, he has held many visiting professorial appointments in both Europe and the United States. Since 2009, he has been Senior Fellow at the Centre for European Integration Studies (ZEI) at the University of Bonn, where he has also been a Visiting Professor; since 2004 he has been Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, Bruges.
Prof. Nugent holds degrees from the University of Kent and the University of Newcastle; he has also taught at the Open University and the University of Manchester. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Editorial Board of the journal, Politics, published by Blackwell; he has also been a member of the International Advisory Board of European Union Politics (2000-04), published by Sage.
Among his numerous advisory and consultative roles, since September 2004 he has been Academic Director of the Institute of European Union Studies of the State University of New York (SUNY), and since 2007 Associate Director of the Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, the latter a partnership between the University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford.
He was elected a CES Research Fellow in April 2011.
Research Interests
While his early research concentrated on British politics, Prof. Nugent’s research now focuses mainly on European Union policy and the European integration process. He is currently working on co-authored books on the policies of the European Union and the European Commission.
