I am available for consultation on Monday 11.00 – 12.00 and Wednesday 11.00 – 12.00

I am a native speaker of French and I have studied Arabic and English at the University of Lyon, France. I then qualified as a translator (from Arabic and English into French) at the École supérieure d’Interprètes et de Traducteurs (ESIT), Sorbonne nouvelle, Paris, where I completed a PhD on the science and techniques of translation and interpreting. I have worked as a staff and freelance translator and taught at Leeds Polytechnic (now Leeds Metropolitan University) prior to joining Salford in 1985. I have also held a visiting professorship at ESIT, Paris Sorbonne (2003;2012).

My main research interests are in the history of translation, with particular focus on the transmission of scientific knowledge, and on the issue of ideology in translation. My research on the translation of nineteenth-century scientific texts was supported by a research grant from the British Academy.

I am on the editorial board of The Translator: Studies in Intercultural Communication, and a member of the advisory board of Forum, International Journal of Interpretation and Translation and Across Languages and Cultures.

At Salford I lead the Centre for Translation and Interpreting in the School of Humanities, Languages and Social Sciences. I teach on the Translation and Interpreting programmes. My teaching focus on theoretical aspects of translation and on the translation of English into French. I have supervised doctoral research on the translation and interpreting of ideology in a variety of genres and media.

I am the Director of the National Network for Translation, a HEFCE-funded Routes into Languages initiative (www.nationalnetworkfortranslation.ac.uk) and I Chair the Training Committee of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (www.iatis.org).
