Biography

I joined the university in January 2010 as Lecturer in Modern and Contemporary English Literature. I love teaching and have enjoyed working with Salford’s inspiring students since day one. I was touched to receive the VC’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 2011.

Before coming to Salford I was a Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Oxford, and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and taught at the University of Oxford and Goldsmiths, University of London.

Research Interests

Most of my research draws on a cultural materialist tradition, and I have special interests in the politics of interwar writing; the modern movement in literature and culture; periodical cultures; and literary and cultural representations of breastfeeding.

Research on periodicals is a key strength at Salford, and with Professor Peter Buse I am on the steering group for the European Society of Periodical Research (ESPRit) which is a collaboration between Salford and the Universities of Radboud in Holland and Ghent in Belgium. I am also one of the editors for Key Words: A Journal of Cultural Materialism and a member of the Executive Committee of the Raymond Williams Society.
