I started my academic career as a lecturer at Guangzhou University of Foreign Studies in China after obtaining my BA in and MA degrees from the same university. Later I completed another MA degree in Modern British Studies at Warwick University on a British Council Fellowship and went on to complete my PhD degree at the University of Stirling. After my Phd, I was offered a post of lectureship and later promoted to associate professor at Nagoya University of Commerce and Business Administration in Japan lecturing in cross-cultural communication, translation studies and other Chinese-related subjects. Upon returning to the UK, I taught at Newcastle University for 6 years before I joined Salford in 2007. Apart from my lecturing career, I also have extensive practical experience as a freelance translator/interpreter worldwide. 

I have a wide range of teaching experience in China, Japan and Britain. My past teaching areas include reading, interpreting, cross-cultural communication and films in English, as well as classic Chinese, translation studies, information technology and translation, and business Chinese. I have also supervised a number of PhD students to completion stage in the broad area of translation studies, including literary translation, political translation, translation as discourse, and translation of children’s literature, film subtitling and interpreting studies.

I am currently convening the MA module of specialized translation with translation technology, UG modules of translation project and level 5 and 6 Chinese. I am lecturing in MA module of conference interpreting and contributing to the module of Principles of Translation and Research Methods. I am also supervising MA dissertations and a lead supervisor to PhD research.

My current research interests focus on critical theory and translation, translator’s autonomy, screen translation, politics of translation. I am willing to consider supervising PhD research in the above areas as well as in areas of literary translation, critical discourse and translation, translation teaching, and ideology and translation/interpreting, as well as Chinese/English comparative studies in the areas of literature, culture and film studies.

My publications and academic conference papers cover a wide range of disciplines including film studies, language studies, and Chinese area studies as well as international studies, but my current research focuses on politics of translation, critical discourse analysis and translation, and translation as political discourse.
