Grant scheme launched to help communities explore local heritage
Local communities will have the chance to gain funding to help them discover more about their history thanks to a new programme supported by the University of Salford, Salford Museum and Art Gallery and the Heritage Lottery Fund North West.
All Our Stories is a scheme established by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) which will make available grants of between £3,000 and £10,000 to community groups and organisations to go towards activities exploring, celebrating and sharing heritage.
Launched at Salford Museum and Art Gallery, All Our Stories was created to coincide with the BBC Two series The Great British Story – A People’s History written and presented by broadcaster and historian Michael Wood.
Sarie Mairs Slee, Associate Head of School Engagement at the University, and event organiser, explained: “With TV programmes such as The Great British Story – A People’s History and others proving so popular with viewers, we’re seeing a real appetite among the public for learning more about heritage.
“We now want to get in touch with community groups who have been inspired to find out more about their own local histories and help develop projects to continue the story.”
Activities eligible for funding could include researching collections and archives held by libraries, museums or local people; holding workshops, talks and sessions exploring people’s memories; and archaeological digs or surveying historic buildings.
Free workshops for groups interested in applying for funding will be held at the University during July, giving more details about the All Our Stories scheme and offering attendees expert advice on how to develop their projects, while providing opportunities for partnership building and training with like-minded enthusiasts.
The deadline for applications for funding is Tuesday 31 July and further information on the workshops and All Our Stories is available from Sarie on 0161 295 2687 or email@example.com.
