ILM Level 5 Coaching & Mentoring

Enhance your skills by taking part in an Institute of Leadership and Management Programme!

We are offering colleagues the opportunity to undertake an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Award in Coaching and Mentoring.  The Coaching and Mentoring programme will be delivered at the University and leads to an externally recognised qualification from the ILM. Aimed at colleagues who have responsibility for coaching or mentoring others, the programme will provide managers and academics with the knowledge, skills and confidence to perform effectively as a coach or mentor as part of their normal day to day role.  In return for this investment in building your coaching skills, it is intended that those qualified as coaches will support the internal coaching resource provided via the Human Resources Development team.  Ongoing supervision and CPD is provided to support practising coaches.

About the course

The programme is delivered over a seven month period and consists of an induction session, six full day workshops, three half-day tutorials and self-facilitated coaching circles.

Topics covered on the programme include:

  • Introduction to Coaching
  • Coaching tools, methods and materials
  • The skills of an effective coach
  • Coaching and its role in managing performance
  • Creating a coaching culture in the workplace

To complete the programme successfully, participants are required to: 

  • attend the programme induction with their line manager (2 hours)
  • complete the full programme of learning & development activities (6 x full-day workshops) plus participation in self-facilitated coaching circles and related reading or reflective activities
  • engage with the tutorial support (3 x half-day sessions)
  • complete a minimum of 12 hours of coaching practice
  • written assessments (3 practice-based assignments)

Due to the level of commitment involved both during and after the programme, it is essential that colleagues wishing to participate in this programme discuss this opportunity with their line manager and receive their support and commitment prior to registering on the programme.   Completion of the ILM programme should form part of participants’ PDR.

How to apply

Prospective applicants should email HR-HRDEnquiries@salford.ac.uk to register their interest in the course. 

You will then be contacted closer to the start date of the course asking you to complete and return the letter of support to HR-HRDEnquiries@salford.ac.uk., at this point you will also be provided with further information on course dates. It is expected that classes for the next cohort will commence around December 2017.

A learner handbook, containing further information on learning outcomes, assignments and module content is provided to all participants at induction. All participants will become registered learners with the ILM and will be provided with the programme materials and access to the ILM's online learning resources. Additionally, a Blackboard site for the programme contains further material and information.

Please note: If you accept a place on the ILM programme, failure to attend all workshops or to complete the programme assignments within 12 months of registering will result in your registration fee and material costs being charged to your business area.
