The University of Salford will celebrate the music and sounds of the city on Friday 9 March with the first ever Salford Music Day.

Taking in two events that will be free for the public, students and staff to attend, the day will be a unique chance to hear a variety of musical styles and genres found at the University’s Music Department and to see some of the latest talented young musicians in action.

A Gala Concert, held at Maxwell Hall on the University’s main campus from 7.00-9.00pm, will feature a performance from the University of Salford Brass Band, including major works from acclaimed brass band composers Kevin Norbury and Peter Graham, Professor of Composition at the University. Professor Graham’s work Cats’ Tales has been scored for both brass and wind and so the University’s Wind Band will join the Brass Band for part of the programme.

In the second half of the Concert the University Big Band and vocalists will team up in a special collaboration with renowned music director Lloyd Butler and students from the Ohio Northern University to perform a selection of show-stoppers from the world of stage musical, including tunes made famous by Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra.

Completing Salford Music Day with a distinct change of musical style, the Islington Mill Showcase from 9.00pm will give some of the best University student rock and pop bands the chance to play live at the Mill’s club space.
