Identifying and retraining media’s ‘accidental’ leaders

The University of Salford has received funding to help identify leaders in the media and creative industries who have come into their positions ‘by accident’ and to encourage growth in the sector.

Many managers in these industries have started their careers in TV, radio or other specialised occupations and have received little or no management training.

This course will help encourage and improve leadership and management skills.  The University is working with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills to offer a new part-funded training course.

Taking place over three days in February, and a further two in March at the University of Salford’s new MediaCityUK building, the Accidental Leaders course provides intensive training in leadership skills such as change management and planning for growth and future changes in the industry.

Although the course costs £1,500, most eligible people can also apply for a Government-backed Leadership and Management Advisory Service grant of up to 50% of the actual course fee.

The course is conducted by Andrew Thomas: an accredited trainer who has also spent 20 years in the digital media industry.

He said: “Many passionate people leading organisations in the media industry are relatively inexperienced and untrained in management and business planning.”

“What this course offers is a good grounding which can transform businesses – making them lean and forward looking.”

To be eligible for the course, candidates must be at Director or CEO level within small and medium enterprises in the creative and digital industries.
