Biography

I am currently a University Lecturer at Salford University where I teach full time on the Physiotherapy undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses.  I have seventeen years of experience of teaching within Higher Education covering subjects such as biology, physical education, science, psychology, anatomy, physiology, research methods, study skills, and assignment writing.  I complete my PhD in 2009 at the University of Central Lancashire where I undertook research in Rheumatology interviewing local residents over a period of time regarding their health.

Prior to working within education I was a Chartered Physiotherapist within the NHS for 10 years at hospitals in my local area, achieving Senior I grade.  During this time I assumed the role of Clinical Educator for students of Physiotherapy thus beginning my teaching career.  While working within the NHS I was also the Physiotherapist to the England Women’s football team for three years.  This was a unique and memorable experience and I was immensely proud to represent my country, working with such talented individuals both at home and during tours of countries including France, Denmark, Italy, Iceland, Bulgaria, and the Soviet Union.

Teaching

I began teaching in a professional capacity whilst working in a hospital environment where I became a Clinical Educator for undergraduate Physiotherapy students from Universities in the region.  This role involved teaching and training undergraduate students with hospitals.  Eventually my enthusiasm for teaching overtook that of my day job and I began teaching at Salford University on a part time basis, becoming a full time member of staff within the School of Health Sciences in 1996.  I am the longest serving member of staff in the department and enjoy my job, and the interaction with students, as much now as when I first began teaching.

Teaching at a university entails a range of teaching methods including lecturing to hundreds of students, small and large group seminar-based sessions and a mix of theory and practical skills.  Since 1998 I have been the Year One tutor which involves a pastoral element as many students are having their first experience of independence away from friends and family.

In 2009 I won the first ever Teaching Excellence Award at Salford University, and the following year was nominated for the Times Educational Innovative Teacher Award - both nominated by my students, a fact of which I am extremely proud.

Research Interests

PhD – Rheumatology: Ankylosing Spondylitis.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an incurable, fluctuating, long-term condition for which prescribed exercise is central to management. However, many people with AS do not undertake prescribed exercises, the reasons for which are poorly-understood.  My research sought to develop a grounded understanding of the exercise beliefs of people with AS, the exercise behaviours they adopt, and the decision making processes they undergo when choosing exercise behaviours.

The study led to the grounding of participant perspectives on exercise in AS, rendering the proposed model both relevant and understandable to people with AS.  From a patient perspective it could help people understand and plan their future exercise behaviour in AS.

For the first time, my PhD has identified and categorised exercise behaviour in the sero-negative spondarthropathy Ankylosing Spondylitis.  In turn this has resulted in the construction of conceptual model.

This research also forms a baseline for future study.
