Biography
Dr Farina Hashmi graduated from Manchester Polytechnic in 1991 with a BSc (Hons) in pure chemistry. After qualifying as a podiatrist from the London Foot Hospital in 1997 she worked in podiatry services in the NHS, the London Foot hospital and also in private practice for several years. She completed her PhD in Biochemistry in 2004 at the Department of Medicine, University College London. Her research focussed on the biochemical and biophysical properties of foot skin in diabetes.
Since 2004 Farina has worked as a Senior Lecturer and Research Co-ordinator in the School of Health Professions at the University of Brighton; a Research Fellow at the Leeds Institute of Molecular Medicine, Division of Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Disease and Leeds NIHR Biomedical Research Unit and a Research Fellow in the School of Health at the University of Salford. She currently holds a post as a Lecturer in Podiatry and leads the skin biomechanics research within the Foot and Ankle Research Programme at the School. Farina and colleagues are working on novel outcome measures for the assessment and treatments of common foot skin pathologies in collaboration with industrial partners.
Over her career, Farina has enjoyed working with national and international colleagues in key areas of foot skin research and has secured over £700,000 in research grants. She has published in international academic journals and has contributed to scientific and professional conferences world-wide. She is a reviewer for several academic journals and grant funding bodies and is the Associate Editor for the Journal of Foot and Ankle Research (UK). Farina is currently the Vice-Chair of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Research and Development Committee.
