About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

First Day:- A member of the team (hopefully named mentor) to go through orientation & programme

Programme will be flexible in relation to clinics able to attend and geographical location of the student

Local Induction - Environment and team; as above plus other team members: Karen Vernon, Christine Allen, Alison Braford, Fran Jackson, Wendy Power

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

Whilst there will be a named assessor, it will be a team approach.  

The assessors on the team will have a rotational allocation for named assessor

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?

Office Hours:-

Monday - Friday 08.30 - 16.30 (some flexibility due to clinical commitments)

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Home visits

Nurse led clinics: newly diagnosed/review/relapse

Consultants specialty clinic: assessment for suitability for treatment/review

None face to face contact (telephone consultations)


Pain clinic

Palliative care clinic

Research department

Patients undergoing specialist treatment: infusion therapy/first diagnosis of medication

Ward reviews

Patient training re injectable therapies

Patient education re lifestyle/self-management

Working with voluntary sector re patient education

What nursing model is used for planning care?

We use the Roper, Logan & Tierney, however, we also use the Guy's Assessment Tool which is specific for multiple sclerosis

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Vital signs: during drug monitoring (infusion & first dose of an oral therapy)

ANTT: principles of

Communication: verbal & non verbal

Admissions: pre planning for admission as well as planned admission process

Discharges: nurse led discharges for specific therapies

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Communication skills:

  • in relation to people being newly diagnosed
  • telephone contact/triage skills

Pharmacovigilance in relation to specific medication drig monitoring/prescription management

Self-management advice for people with long term conditions

Sympton management: MDT, self-management & medication approach

Prioritisation of workload

What resources are available to help students learning?

IT: computer access available to access MS sites for information

Books: specific MS books available within the office (also specific articles)

Library: SRFT library on site

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

We have a Phd student attached to the team who is looking at risk perception of treatment

We liaise with the research department for research studies that the patients may be eligible for

Team audits are undertaken on:

  • Team activity
  • Against NICE quality standards
  • Varying aspects of medication management

MS Nursing Team are encouraged to undertake poster presentation.  In the past 3 years we have had poster accepted at:

  • National MS Conference x 7
  • International Conference x 3

Some members of the team have presented at regional & national conferences/meetings
