About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Please email the named contacts prior to phoning the department.

Students receive an induction to the unit and a student handbook is given to them outlining their clinical experience and the unit.

Students are expected to complete a health and safety checklist to ensure that they know what to do in a variety of situations, e.g. the number to ring for cardiac arrest.

Additionally, learning outcomes will be identified and agreed upon.

Welcome Pack will be emailed out to students prior to placement commencing.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

All mentors/assessors are allocated prior to the students' arrival in the unit. The handbook outlines the mentorship role and the supernumerary status of the student.

The Level 1 Theatre Suite is open Monday - Friday, from 8amto 10.00pm, and Weekends 8am - 5pm. No night duty. A variety of shifts areworked throughout the unit so students’ shifts will vary. Please ask yourmentor or one of the Placement Educational Leads for more information.TheLevel 3 Theatre Complex has shifts of: 0800-1630, 0800-1700 and 0800-1930, withno weekends

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Students will care for patients listed for elective surgeryand therefore need pre-operative checks intra operative (in theatre) andpost-operative care (recovery area).

Students gain experience in all theatreareas from elective surgery, including specialities such as general surgery,urology and neurology, to emergency surgery in the general emergency list,neuro urgency list and the orthopaedic trauma list.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Nursing model based on Orem's self care and patient centred pathways.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

  • Informed consent

  • Pain management and post -operative recovery observations
  • Transfer protocols
  • Scrubbing up technique

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Airway management and observation of intubation; extubation; cannulation.

What resources are available to help students learning?

Students receive a set of objectives for learning in the unit in addition to their own.

Every Thursday morning there is a 2 hour teaching (practical) session run by a consultant anaesthetist.

There is also an Education Room.

What research and practice development activities are being undertaken?

Research into patient warming aids, pain relief, and enhanced recovery assessment tool adn theatre audits

Staff in theatre endeavour to deliver to their patients safeand effective physical and psychological care throughout the pre-operative andpost-operative phases of their treatment.

We aim to provide an individual approach to care with atrained nurse acting as the patients' advocate throughout their time in theunit. We aim to achieve our philosophy by working as a team towards a commongoal. We will strive to act in a professional manner at all times, employ newand up to date nursing research, question our own practice so as to facilitatethe maintenance of high standards of nursing care.

We aim at all times to promote an environment conducive toholistic wellbeing enabling a smooth and rapid return to the patient's normalenvironment with no harm coming to the patient.
