About this placement
What is organised for students on commencement of placement?
Students will be shown the layout of the ward, including the location of fire points, exits, equipment and resuscitation trolley, and will be given the emergency numbers.
What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?
Students will be allocated a mentor prior to arrival.
What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?
Day shift:- 07.00 - 19.30 Night shift:- 19.00 - 07.30
The deficit in full time hours is made up with half a day which will be planned in the off duty on discussion with the mentor. Students must ring the ward if they are going to be late or are off sick.
What patient care situations are available in this placement?
Caring for patients with wide-ranging medical problems including diabetes and associated complications.
What nursing model is used for planning care?
Roper, Logan and Tierney Model of Nursing.
What core clinical skills can be learnt?
Recording observations, pressure area care, wound care, administration of medicines, enhanced roles.
What additional clinical skills can be learnt?
Caring for patients with Variable Rate Insulin Infusion (VRII)
What resources are available to help students learning?
Caring for patients with diabetes.Devised 3 learning objectives for students to achieve by end of placement - admission process, diabetes and care of diabetic patients.
