About this placement

What is organised for students on commencement of placement?

Before you start your placement on H2 we would ask that you email the PELs (email link above) so that we could send you the welcome pack and the work book. You are expected to read them through and undertake the activities in the work book before the start of your placement, if you can, as this will help to orientate you. The work book is a simple exercise to establish your basic knowledge of hand washing, ANTT and the respiratory system.  On the first day, we ask you to bring your practice assessment document / practice assessment record and learning agreement (that can be accessed via the if necessary).
You will then be able identify learning needs and opportunities with the help of your mentor. We would also ask that you familiarise yourselves with the ward/trust policies.

What are the arrangements for mentors/assessors?

You will be allocated a qualified mentor and a second mentor prior to the commencement of your placement through emails or via the telephone.

What shift patterns are students allocated for learning?




Shift Notes:

Long Day: 7:00 - 19:30
Night Shift: 19:00 - 7:30
We also offer alternative shifts: early: 7:00-15:00, late: 13:00-21:00, night: 19:00-7:00.
Individual requests/circumstances will be considered depending on the mentors’ availability.

What patient care situations are available in this placement?

Ward H2 cares for patients with respiratory and medical problems and those who are terminally ill. The ward also cares for patients with chronic airway disease, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, non-invasive ventilation, tracheostomies, and laryngectomies.

What nursing model is used for planning care?

Our ward is using a modified Roper, Logan and Tierney model of nursing (1998) based on the activities of living. However, at Salford Royal, an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) is basically used to find information about the patient and for updating the patient’s record.

What core clinical skills can be learnt?

Care of patients with chest drains
Care of patients with tracheostomy and laryngectomy tubes
Oral hygiene
Non-invasive ventilation care
Oxygen therapy
End of life care

What additional clinical skills can be learnt?

Care of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
Care of patients with respiratory failure
Care of patients with asthma
Care of patients with pulmonary fibrosis

What resources are available to help students learning?

Patients with simple to complex medical conditions
Opportunities are available to work with respiratory specialist nurses and other allied health professional.

Each member of the team actively seeks to develop his or her skills in order to provide the most effective care management. Endeavouring at all times to provide information required for patients to make informed choices about their care management.
